¹ The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. ² Abraham brought forward Isaac; and Isaac brought forward Jacob; and Jacob brought forward Judas and his brothers; ³ And Judas brought forward Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares brought forward Esrom; and Esrom brought forward Aram; ⁴ And Aram brought forward Aminadab; and Aminadab brought forward Naasson; and Naasson brought forward Salmon; ⁵ And Salmon brought forward Booz of Rachab; and Booz brought forward Obed of Ruth; and Obed brought forward Jesse; ⁶ And Jesse brought forward David the king; and David the king brought forward Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; ⁷ And Solomon brought forward Roboam; and Roboam brought forward Abia; and Abia brought forward Asa; ⁸ And Asa brought forward Josaphat; and Josaphat brought forward Joram; and Joram brought forward Ozias; ⁹ And Ozias brought forward Joatham; and Joatham brought forward Achaz; and Achaz brought forward Ezekias; ¹⁰ And Ezekias brought forward Manasses; and Manasses brought forward Amon; and Amon brought forward Josias; ¹¹ And Josias brought forward Jechonias and his brothers, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: ¹² And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias brought forward Salathiel; and Salathiel brought forward Zorobabel; ¹³ And Zorobabel brought forward Abiud; and Abiud brought forward Eliakim; and Eliakim brought forward Azor; ¹⁴ And Azor brought forward Sadoc; and Sadoc brought forward Achim; and Achim brought forward Eliud; ¹⁵ And Eliud brought forward Eleazar; and Eleazar brought forward Matthan; and Matthan brought forward Jacob; ¹⁶ And Jacob brought forward Joseph the husband of Mary, of who was born Jesus, who is called Christ. ¹⁷ So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations. ¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before+ they came together, she was found with child+ + of the Holy Ghost. ¹⁹ Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. ²⁰ But while he thought on these things, see, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, you son of David, fear not to take to you Mary your wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. ²¹ And she will bring forward a son, and you will call his name JESUS: for he will save his people from their sins. ²² Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, ²³ See, a virgin will be with child+ + , and will bring See a son, and they will call his name Emmanuel, which when interpreted means, God with us. ²⁴ Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took to him his wife: ²⁵ And knew her not till+ she had brought forward her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
